Aussie Gold® Orchid Mix has been formulated by Ivan J. Harrison, Former First Vice President of the San Diego County Orchid Society for use on his own 1,500+ orchid collection. Ivan was awarded an American Orchid Society (AOS) 90-point Educational Award in March 2003.
Aussie GoldTM Orchid Mix is a "NEW HYDROPONIC" Growing Media developed for Orchids but used by all Growers is now available in Canada. Aussie GoldTM comes in four grades. REGULAR Grade can be used for almost all epiphytic orchids, (species and hybrids) and most plants using other soilless media. FINE Grade for deflasking, for seedlings and for all fine rooted orchids such as Masdevallia, Dracula, and Oncidiums. It also works just as well on African Violets, epiphylums, miniature roses, plumeria, bonsai, tomatoes, herbs and house plants. Lady Slipper orchids now have their own (slightly modified mixture), especially paphiopedilums and phragmipediums called PAPH & PHRAG Grade to accommodate those orchids found growing in or near riverbeds. Lastly, is the LARGE Grade mix which is formulated for large cattleya and specimen plants or large plants requiring greater drainage capacity.
Aussie Gold® Orchid Mix is based on Diatomite, which is now used extensively by commercial orchid growers worldwide, who have found that orchids planted in Diatomaceous earth grow and bloom faster than in regular orchid mixes (H&R). Aussie Gold® Orchid Mix augments the proven benefits of Diatomaceous earth by including other inert and orchid-friendly ingredients. Orchids die for a variety of reasons, most notably root rot - caused by deterioration of the medium and over / underwatering.
Aussie Gold® Orchid Mix eliminates these problems. Aussie Gold® Orchid Mix is 100% organic and highly absorbant, and IT DOES NOT DETERIORATE OR BREAK DOWN, AND YOU CANNOT OVERWATER IT. It is also non-toxic, pH neutral and high in silica. Aussie Gold® Orchid Mix contains absolutely NO bark!

This makes Aussie Gold® Orchid Mix more expensive than other mixes, but it will outperform any bark mix on the market. How much is it worth to keep your orchid healthy? If you paid $100, or even $20, for your orchid, why wouldn't you pay the cost of a cup of coffee per pot to give it a nurturing environment?

orchid potting mixes
Orchid Potting Mixes - As most orchid enthusiasts know- growing conditions -be it on the windowsill, under various artificial light systems, or in a greenhouse will vary widely for individual to individual. The same is also true for light levels, temperatures, humidity, fertilizing, and watering schedules used in our diverse growing conditions.
As a result, successful growers develop mixes that fit their particular conditions, preferences, and procedures. The following mixes are suggested as a starting point. We strongly encourage you to make up a few variations that you think will work for you and experiment with them to see what works best.
We suggest that when using Diatomaceous Earth in your mix - think larger, looser, less watering, and less frequent repotting!
